Protect our Trails, Forests & Parks – Get Involved

Ohio to allow oil/gas drilling in state parks.

Division of Forestry to increase logging to 50% of new growth, up from 17%.

advo_loggingHeadlines like these are becoming more frequent in Ohio. The public lands Ohioans use for a variety of recreational activities are desperately threatened by a cash-strapped Ohio government seeking to extract any wealth possible from natural resources residing on and below these lands. Not since the oil, coal and iron ore booms of the late 1800s thru the early 1900s has an attitude of such disregard and short sightedness existed toward the value of land preservation. Pillaging the land for short economic gain while expressing little regard for the long-term effects is a misguided management policy at best. It doesn’t have to be that way.

It is time all outdoor enthusiasts living in the Buckeye State come together and let our lawmakers and policy makers know that enough is enough! Whether you use our parks and forests to hike, camp, hunt, bird watch, fish, trail ride, paddle or just enjoy being in the woods, BackpackOhio.com urges you to become active in the fight to protect what belongs to us–our public lands! The forest, park or trail you love to visit is threatened.

Below is contact information for Ohio’s governor, legislators, Wayne National Forest and key contacts at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Ohio Environmental Council provides on its web site a very useful advocacy toolkit. Their toolkit provides ideas and tips, along with sample letters, for contacting elected officials and newspaper editors, plus how to get involved in public testimony.

On this site, we have compiled a list of numerous environmental and conservation organizations all with the same goal of protecting our natural resources.

Keep Ohio natural!
